Transgender Day of Remembrance

Mayor Teri Johnston and the Key West City Commission have proclaimed today, November 20th  as Transgender Day of Remembrance.

The day is set aside to remember those who have lost their lives because of anti-transgender violence and to encourage the community to commit to ending hate crimes and ensuring dignity, equality and justice to all.

Key West has a long history of acceptance and inclusion of the LGBT community.

This day is an opportunity to educate and inform the public of the challenges the transgender community still faces in their daily lives.

Over the past year, 368 people have been killed as a result of hate crimes.

This afternoon, a candlelight vigil is being held at St. Paul’s Church on Duval Street beginning at 5:30 p.m. During the vigil, the names of these victims will be read.
