Honoring an Activist

Tearful friends of the late activist Mila Demier accepted a proclamation in honor of her hard work for the community.

The City Commission on Tuesday proclaimed June 14th as Mila Demier Public Health and Environmental Awareness Day.

Demier was a vocal advocate for the environment and for public health. She became active during the BP oil spill, and then spearheaded the effort against releasing genetically modified mosquitoes in the Keys. She died suddenly in 2018 while in Washington D.C. while advocating this cause with elected officials and the Environmental Protection Agency..

“Access to a toxin-free environment to raise children and protect the ecologically treasured Florida Keys were tenets of Mila Demier’s years of personal investment of time and resources,” reads the proclamation.
