National Suicide Prevention Month

The Key West City Commission, during the recent meeting, has proclaimed September as National Suicide Prevention Month.

Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United Sates and is the second leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 10 to 34.

In 2017, Florida experienced 3187 suicide deaths; twenty occurred in Monroe County. In 2018, there has been a rise in the number of suicide deaths in the county.

“The stigma associated with mental health conditions and suicide works against prevention by discouraging persons at risk for suicide from seeking lifesaving help,” reads the proclamation. “Organizations such as The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention are dedicated to saving lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide, through research education, advocacy and resources for those who have lost or struggle.”
