About the Key West Planning Department:

The City of Key West is one of the world's most remarkable urban environments. Its historic street scapes, unique culture, and beautiful environment are a magnet for residents and visitors. Maintaining and improving the fabric of the City is one of the Planning Department's most important tasks. The Department works with the community to craft policy documents, such as the adopted Comprehensive Plan, that guide future actions. We also work to create regulations to implement policy directives through the adopted Land Development Regulations (LDRs). On a day-to-day basis, our staff meets with the public to help interpret regulations, explain development approval processes, and discuss specific projects.

Department Functions:
  • Maintaining the adopted Comprehensive Plan of the City in accordance with Florida Statutes.
  • Refining the Land Development Regulations to implement the Comprehensive Plan and respond to community needs.
  • Maintaining an accounting system of the building permits issued pursuant to the Building Permit Allocation System (BPAS).
  • Staffing the Key West Planning Board.
  • Updating Geographic Information System (GIS) data.
  • Providing all city planning services to the City.
  • Maintaining a courteous professional planning and development review process available to the public.
  • Maintaining the Future Land Use Map and Official Zoning Map.
  • Maintaining a competent, qualified professional staff through a program of continuous training.
