[ARCHIVED] Electric bikes and Scooters Restricted from Using Pedestrian-Only Sidewalks

City Seal

The City of Key West wants to remind riders of electric bikes and scooters that they cannot ride on sidewalks or pedestrian pathways unless the route is designated as a multi-use pathway.  City Ordinance 70-902 restricts electric bikes and other micro-mobility devices from being used on most sidewalks on the island.

Designated multi-use pathways include the promenades on North and South Roosevelt Blvd and Palm Avenue to Eaton Street.  These devices are also allowed on the section of Bertha leading to Atlantic Blvd. and Atlantic Blvd. itself.  They are also allowed on the multi-use pathway from College Road across Cow Key Channel.

E-bikes and scooters must be operated on the street anywhere else on the island.

In addition, when on the multi-use pathways, these recreational devices must operate at a speed of 15 miles per hour or lower.  The rider assumes all the responsibility of a bicyclist: yielding the right of way to pedestrians and giving an audible signal before passing.

This restriction does not apply to devices designated by the Americans with Disabilities Act.
