[ARCHIVED] Police Earn Lifesaving Award

Key West Police Challenge Coin

During an awards ceremony at City Hall on Thursday, Sergeant Cynthia Williams and Officer Andrew Litton were awarded the Key West Police Lifesaving Award, presented by Deputy Chief Randy Smith.

On January 14,  Sgt. Williams and Officer Litton worked at Mallory Square conducting port security when a male collapsed and needed medical attention.  Both Sgt. Williams and Ofc. Litton initiated life-saving techniques by utilizing their training, performing high-quality CPR, and using a nearby AED.  Sgt. Williams and Ofc. Litton acted swiftly and without hesitation.

The patient was a runner participating in a marathon run when he collapsed in a crowded area.  Hundreds of race participants, spectators, tourists, and cruise ship passengers witnessed the incident.

"Had it not been for the quick action of Sgt. Williams and Ofc. Litton, using their training and excellent decision-making capabilities,” said Smith, “this victim may have perished."
