[ARCHIVED] Coast Guard Cleanup for Mohawk Day

City Seal

Mayor Johnston recently presented the captain and crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Mohawk with a proclamation recognizing Mohawk Day.  After reading the proclamation, the crew gathered along Palm Avenue for a major cleanup.

In 2022, the Coast Guard Cutter Mohawk adopted the area surrounding the Trumbo Point base under the City's Adopt-A-Spot program.  Each year, they renew the pledge and clean up the area.

Mohawk Day was first proclaimed in 1991 by then-mayor Capt. Tony Tarracino when the cutter first arrived in the island city.

The crew of the Mohawk has provided a significant and valued addition to our schools, churches, civic organizations, economy, and the community at large for many years.

The Mohawk is the final of thirteen 270-foot medium-endurance cutters built for the U.S. Coast Guard. It is the namesake of the USS Mohawk, a vessel that launched 14 attacks against German U-boats (submarines) during World War II.
