[ARCHIVED] KWPD Sponsoring Academy Recruits

City Seal

The Key West Police Department seeks dedicated individuals aspiring to join the force as police officers.  The City of Key West is set to employ and sponsor multiple candidates in the upcoming session of the Basic Law Enforcement Police Academy at The College of the Florida Keys Institute of Criminal Justice.

These sponsorships present a unique chance to be hired by the Key West Police Department while receiving a salary during the pursuit of becoming a sworn officer.  Additionally, selected academy recruits won't have to bear the financial burden of tuition, uniforms, fees, books, or supplies, as all expenses are covered through the sponsorship.

Successful candidates chosen as academy recruits will receive payment while attending the Academy full-time.  After successfully completing the program and passing the state exam, academy recruits will attain certification as police officers, commencing with a starting salary exceeding $65,767 per year.  The benefits package includes paid health and dental insurance, paid vacations, participation in a take-home car program, and a retirement plan.

Applicants must meet specific criteria, including being at least 21 years old, holding a high school diploma or equivalent (GED), maintaining good moral character, and having no felony or domestic violence convictions.  Other requirements include a valid Florida driver's license, a responsible driving record, no misdemeanor convictions involving perjury or false statements, and an honorable discharge from the Armed Forces of the United States.  Successful candidates must pass various checks and tests, including a Florida Department of Law Enforcement record check, medical examination, drug screening, background investigation, psychological test, voice stress test, table of adult basic education test, physical agility test, and the criminal justice basic abilities test.  The Key West Police Department is an equal opportunity employer, considering applicants without discrimination based on race, color, national origin, sex, age, handicap, marital status, religion, or any other legally protected category.

The Academy is scheduled to commence in late spring 2024, and the selection and testing process is already underway.  If you are interested in this opportunity, contact our Recruiter today!  For more information, contact the Police Department Recruiting Officer at 305-809-1087 or recruiting@cityofkeywest-fl.gov.
