Mayor Teri Johnston was happy to present John Stevens with a special commendation for his quick action that saved the life of a child.
On the morning of September 10, Stevens, an employee at Naval Air Station Key West, was shopping in the Winn Dixie Store in Key West. He heard a mother and grandmother yelling and screaming. A 6-month-old child who had something stuck in their throat was screaming and turning purple.
Stevens immediately performed the child Heimlich Maneuver and cleared the passageway. The paramedics arrived and declared the baby safe.
"Steven's quick and heroic actions may have saved the child's life," said Mayor Johnston.
