Carmen Turner Honored

Several Key West city commissioners reminisced proudly on Tuesday regarding their own roles in bringing former City Commissioner Carmen Turner into public life.

Mayor Craig Cates presented Turner a commendation during the commissioner's regular meeting, thanking her for her dedication and "commitment to alleviate blight within the Bahama Village Community Redevelopment Area" after chairing the Tax Increment Fund board.

Commissioner Clayton Lopez, who was elected to serve District VI after Turner stepped down, appointed Turner to the TIF board. Commissioner Jimmy Weekley noted that he originally brought her into public life by suggesting Turner for a governor's appointment to fill a vacant seat on the city commission.

Commissioner Rossi offered her the opportunity to sit in her old seat on the dais, and noted that he and Jimmy had served beside her on the commission.

"I have a passion for public service," said Turner, and she commended the other members of the TIF board. She also thanked City staff, saying, "I'm always amazed at the dedication and the ingenuity."
