Recycling

Recycling is single stream recycling, which allows residents and businesses to place all recyclables - plastic bottles and containers, paper and cardboard, metal cans, glass bottles and jars- into a single bin for separation at the Waste Management Recycling Materials Recovery facility in Pembroke Pines.    Recycling is not allowed to be in plastic bags, recycling will not be picked up if in plastic bags.  Also recycle bins contaminated with garbage will not be picked up.  Waste Management Inc, FL picks up all residential recycling, businesses are able to contract with Waste Management or any provider for recycling services or haul recycling themselves to the City Transfer Station on Rockland Key for no charge.  Recycling is accepted at the City of Key West Solid Waste Transfer Station for no charge.

Yard Waste

Yard waste must be loose in the containers, not in plastic bags, please, or in a large paper bag.  Yard waste is all the plant material in your yard including fruit and coconuts, not water hoses, etc.  The Division of Solid Waste has yard waste stickers available for no charge, you may pick them up at the Utilities Office at City Hall, 1300 White Street.  For large amounts of yard waste (for example cutting down a tree) you can call Waste Management Inc, FL or any hauler for an estimate for pickup or haul it to the City of Key West Solid Waste Transfer Station.

Garbage

Garbage is collected once a week for residents.  It must be in a sealed garbage bag in a garbage cart.  If you have extra garbage you can place it in garbage bag beside your garbage cart for collection on collection day.  Businesses must contact Waste Management Inc., FL for garbage service and all businesses are required to have a minimum of one pickup a week.

City Code 58-31 states containers may not be placed in City Right of Way before 4:00pm the day before collection and must be removed by 8:00pm the day of collection.  It is against City Code to leave containers in the street or on the sidewalk.
