The Key West Fire Department is wearing blue duty shirts all month to recognize Nation Autism Awareness Month. The back of the shirt depicts the KWFD letters made up of the colors associated with the Autism Awareness Puzzle Ribbon, which is the most enduring and recognized symbol of the autism community in the world.
First responders need to be well versed in working with autistic individuals to provide the highest level of care.
"Probably everyone in this city has a loved one or knows someone whose loved one has this condition," said Fire Chief Alan Averette. "It's important that we, as fire and rescue workers, know the best way to read a situation and provide the best response."
