[ARCHIVED] City Commission Proclaims Women's History Month

City Seal

Mayor Teri Johnston and the Key West City Commission have proclaimed March as Women's History Month.

Darlene Thomas, President of the Keys Chapter of the National Organization of Women, accepted the proclamation.

"We're very lucky to live in a community that accepts women-led organizations," she said.  "We're making history, and we'll continue making history.  Make sure your daughters do so as well."

The national designation recognizes that women of every race, class and ethnic background have made historic contributions to the growth and strength of our nation and our community in countless recorded and unrecorded ways.

"Women have been leaders in securing their rights of suffrage and equal opportunity," reads the proclamation, "but also in the abolitionist movement, industrial labor movement, civil rights movement, especially in the peace movement, and have often been overlooked and undervalued."
