The "Final Mile" project seeks to install bicycle, pedestrian, and bus rider amenities at high-use bus stops and public areas along the Lower Keys Shuttle bus route. These amenities address the "final mile" or "last mile" barrier for those who would otherwise use public transportation.
74 sites from Key West through Marathon are slated to get improvements. Ridership data along the Lower Keys Shuttle was analyzed to prioritize improvements along the route. Some public parks and buildings were included. (Full project plans can be downloaded here.)
Construction began in April 2023 and is expected to be completed by November 2023. Sitework includes pouring concrete at some locations to mount install features. Coral Construction Company contractor began work in Key West and will proceed north along US 1.
The Final Mile Project includes a number of features that improve transit and bicycling for those who choose alternative forms of transportation, such as:
Installed features can be found on a map here.
The Final Mile Project has been funded by the Key West Transportation Alternative Fund and a Transportation Alternatives grant administered by the Florida Department of Transportation.
